Amsterdam City Breaks Guide
Of all holidays, I feel Amsterdam city breaks offer the visitor the most variety available from any European city break destination.
My wife and I decided to visit the city for our anniversary and we had a fantastic time. The whole inner city is a fantastic historical treat for the tourist. There are plenty of museums including two of my personal favourites, the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum.
Public transport is efficient and reasonably priced. If you want to get around quickly, the best thing to do is to buy a strippenkart. This is a travel card which you must punch when getting on or off trams, buses or trains.
Alternatively, of course, you can hire a bike for getting around but be careful. The traffic can be quite wild to the uninitiated and tram lines are a potential hazard. There is also the option of the canal boat tours. These are a great way of seeing the city. You can sit back, relax and get on and off as you please at the most interesting spots. Small pedalos and motor boats can also be hired for reasonable prices.
One of my favorite things to do in Amsterdam is to sit with a cold Heineken outside a brown cafe overlooking a picturesque canal. On a balmy evening, there really is nothing to match it.
For those who dare to venture there, the Red Light District is certainly an experience. During the day it is full of tourists gaping at the windows but beware at night as it can feel quite dangerous and there are some rather unsavoury types wandering about.
The Leidseplein is also a great place to head to in the evening. There are plenty of bars here and numerous street entertainers to entertain and amuse.

The Panama Canal
The United States of America built the Panama Canal at the beginning of last century. It took 10 years and a lot of lives to build it. What many people do not know, is that the French were the first ones that tried to build the Canal. Their company went bankruptcy, not because they did not have engineering expertise, but because they knew nothing about the tropical diseases, which caused many deaths among their workers.
After the French failed, the Americans came to Panama with two leaders: one Engineer and one Medical Doctor. Each one fought in his field, and each one won the battle! The Engineer and his team had to fight the land, and designed a Canal with locks. The locks are gigantic water elevators that rise or lower the ships to the level of the artificial lakes, created between the mountains, in the heart of the Panamanian land. The fact that not a single water pump is used to fill or empty the locks, still is amazing today, almost a hundred years after the Panama Canal was built.
The Doctor carried on a different fight: he had to eradicate the diseases that had killed the French a couple of decades ago. Malaria and Yellow Fever were known at the time for being fatal. Some historians say that first, the medical team thought that the ants were transmitting the diseases, and then they found out that mosquitoes were responsible for the transmission. A massive fumigation campaign was the solution, to dramatically lower the incidence of Malaria and Yellow fever during the Panama Canal construction days.
All this information and much more, can be learned by the visitor when taking one of the available Panama Canal tours, since there is a new building, with a museum, movie theatre and several observation decks, to see the transit process through the locks.
There is a lot to learn about the canal construction and functioning, so if you are planning some Panama tours, a visit to the Panama Canal is a must in your agenda.
