Shelter Island in San Diego

January 29, 2011 · Posted in San Diego · Comment

San Diego is truly a city influenced by the sea. There are many attractions in the city that are related to the ocean, such as its many pristine beaches, its venues like SeaWorld, and its many commercial and residential areas located near the sea, among others. Then there are truly specialized places known primarily for one particular thing, like Shelter Island, home to San Diego’s yachting scene.

Shelter Island is not truly an island, as it is connected to the mainland by a thin strip of land. In fact, it is not even a natural island per se, as its origins were both natural and man-made, a combination of two forces that produced one of the finest boating places in the city.

The island first came to life as deposits of sand and soil from the San Diego River collected in one specific area over many, many years. In fact, in the early days of Shelter Island, it was considered merely as a “mudbank”. But it proved to be an ideal area for dumping dredged material from San Diego Bay, taken when the U.S. Navy worked on the area during World War II. During the 1940s, the dredging program produced enough land to create an entrance to the yacht basin, as well as the land to connect the island to Point Loma. Further development over the following decades resulted in what we now know as Shelter Island, a place praised by many as a man made wonderland of sub-tropical splendor, made from out of nothing.

There are many notable attractions in Shelter Island, in particular, restaurants, and hotels, which people visiting the island can enjoy. There are also a number of arts venues, like the Tunaman’s Memorial, which is a larger than life bronze sculpture dedicated to the tuna industry of years past, and the Yokohaman Friendship Bell, housed in a pagoda.

But it is best known as a yachting destination, where yacht clubs like the San Diego Yacht Club, Southwestern Yacht Club, and Silvergate Yacht Club, find their home. It is also the ideal place for superyachts, which are larger versions of the traditional yacht, due to the island’s deep waters.

Whether it’s for the yachts, or the restaurants, or the hotels, Shelter Island is an ideal place to visit for tourists and locals alike.

You might have read already several travel magazines and travel blogs that all packages how beautiful Cairns is. And to convince you is not the purpose of this article.

Instead, on the other hand, this article will provide you with necessary guidance on how to use your budget with utmost efficiency. This means that I will be giving you advice on what to purchase, where to buy, and what to not buy yet.

The first and foremost cost in having a vacation, not only to Cairns, but in all places as well, is the expenses for transportation. If you choose to travel via air, which is the most common way to go to Cairns, airfares, airport taxes and terminal fees will definitely eat your budget. Booking for several seats in the economy class will not be enough, especially if you will be travelling with lots of members of the family. As an alternative for that, you must check out promo and cheap flights. There are lots of cheap flights to Cairns from Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney that are being offered by airlines like Jetstar Australia, Virgin Blue airlines, and even Qantas.

It would be best to book two-way flights at least two (2) months before your vacation to avail of low cost airfares and promos as well.

Secondly, but equally important to airfare costs, is the travel insurance. This is one form of investing wisely, especially if you are travelling with your relatives who are 65 years old and above. If so, you can search for the best cheap travel insurance for over 65 years old that will match you budget.
