Sicilian Lakes

Since the unification of Italy, and more especially during the last twenty-five years, a great deal has been done towards the forestation and irrigation of the central part of Sicily, which had become one of the barest and most forbidding of places, scorched by the heat of midsummer and bitten by winter frosts, not unlike the Armenian plateau round Erzerum in Asia Minor. The Biviere, or Lago di Lentini, once the largest lake in Sicily, is now being drained. Its reclamation will be a boon to the province of Catania, since its shores had become almost as malarious as the old maremma of central Italy.

In general, Sicily has no lakes such as Maggiore, Como and Garda in northern Italy, or even as important as Lake Albano near Rome. The few Sicilian lakes are generally smaller than the Serpentine. Lake Pergusa, which lies to the south of Enna at a height of 1,000 feet above sea-level, is the supposed scene of the abduction of Proserpine by Pluto, king of the Underworld. The gorgeous descriptions found in Diodorus, the country which surrounds this lake must, to a certain extent, be exaggerated. They speak of luxuriant woods, of flowers whose perfume was strong enough to smother the scent of a hunted animal. Still there is good reason to believe that this part of the island, and many others, were richly wooded and overgrown with grasses and flowers in ancient times. But, as in Calabria, in Greece, and in most other Mediterranean countries, climatic changes, together with the reckless exploitation of forests and the perpetual insecurity of the open country, have laid bare what used to be fertile slopes and valleys.

Near Messina, along the eastern shores of the Punta del Faro, there is the Lago di Ganzirri, which now communicates with the sea and at the bottom of which, according to an old legend, lies a submerged town. It has become the seat of a flourishing oyster industry. Lake Gurrida, near Randazzo, on the northern slopes of Mount Etna, is a lake only in winter. During the summer it loses its water, and becomes just a grassy hollow. There is a curious, semi-volcanic lake let near Mineo, the Palicorum lacus of the ancients, whose waters are continually disturbed by the emanation of gases. It was once regarded as sacred to the Palici, twin gods of the Sikelians and of the Sikeliots.

Things to Bring in a Limousine

Getting a limousine is a great service that is not only fun but also highly practical with many benefits in terms of leg room, privacy and quality of service. However that doesn’t mean that there aren’t ways you can make your limo service even more enjoyable, and particularly if you are going on a long journey or using an airport limo it’s a good idea to bring some entertainment of your own and some items that can help you to make the experience a little more comfortable.

First of all, if you are going by airport limousine and traveling a long way, then you may want to look into bringing some kind of film. Many limos have a DVD player that you can use and this is something that can hold your attention on a long journey and that’s great for keeping children entertained too.

Similarly you may want to bring a CD – this way you can enjoy having your own music on while you travel which is one of the big advantages over public transport. If you would rather not subject the whole limo to your music, then bring headphones and an iPod and you can plug them in and while away the hours.

Another good idea is to bring a blanket and pillow. Unlike smaller vehicles, limos are highly comfortable and getting to sleep in them is more than just a pipe dream. This then means that you can enjoy relaxing and get to your destination feeling fresh.

Or if you’d rather work – then a laptop is a great idea. Other entertainment options include a computer games console or a book.

You should also look into taking good and many limos allow you to bring your own food. If you are getting an airport taxi or sedan service they may or may not allow food so be sure to check in advance.

For a Memorable Experience in Kauai, Set Off on a Na Pali Coast Boat Tour

January 24, 2012 · Posted in Hawaii, Honeymoon Travel · Comment

People who visit the islands of Hawaii expect to see a paradise of vast beauty and to enjoy much needed relaxation. However, tourists and people on their honeymoon don’t always know what specific area to visit or where to find the most popular attractions.  One great reference to use, Discover Your Honeymoon, is an ideal tool designed to help plan your trip.  For those traveling to Kauai, one area that should be at the top of everyone’s list is the Na Pali Coast.  The scenic cliffs and picturesque beaches provide the perfect backdrop for a truly memorable experience.

The Na Pali Coast is an area that is home to unsurpassed beauty.  It doesn’t matter whether you are on a Kauai family vacation, looking for a romantic getaway destination or just in search of a relaxing beach vacation, if you are in Kauai, you must visit the Na Pali Coast.  The sheer beauty is unlike anything else.  It will leave you re-energized and after it is all over, you will have a completely new appreciation for nature.

Once there, you must decide on how to take in this experience.  Tours in Kauai are a great way to see the coast and learn all about the region.  Two of the best Na Pali Coast tour platforms include helicopter and boat tours.  Both are very different in nature, but can provide excellent experiences and perspectives.  There are many different companies which offer tours, so be sure to take a look at tour packages and duration.  For Kauai Na Pali Coast boat tours, the size of the boat and seating capacity can also impact the experience so choose based on your personal preference.   For example, if you are a cautious person and the open sea gives you anxiety, choose a tour with a larger boat.  The larger boats fair better against the ocean’s waves which minimize the impact you will feel on the water.  Boat tours are popular because being out on the water is an experience all in itself.  When you can combine this experience with the Na Pali Coast in the background and whales, dolphins and sea turtles at your side, you will understand why it doesn’t get any better!

In order to choose the right boat tour for you, it would be wise to take a minute to look up customer reviews.  Although most tours are top notch, there are some that consistently deliver superior customer service.  Captain Andy’s tour is one of the more popular companies delivering great Na Pali Coast tours for over 25 years.  One last thing: be sure to bring your camera!  You will not want to miss out on taking a piece of the adventure back home with you.
