Eating, Drinking and Boat Tours in Berlin

Over the past few years Berlin has completely changed to become one of the world’s most popular tourist cities.  Little more than two decades ago, this city had a wall cutting it in half and large parts of it were still in ruins.  Since then, however, it has become one of the hippest cities in Europe. It has loads of amazing shops, a busy fashion scene, clubs that are filled with dancers all night and great live music, theatre and Opera.

In fact, it is hard to think of another major city anywhere that has changed as quickly in recent years.  Its fantastic history is a huge draw, with thousands of people coming to see the Reichstag, the Berlin Wall and the old border crossing at Checkpoint Charlie.  Despite the fact that so many people visit every year, many of them do not know a secret that almost all locals know. That secret is that the best way to see Berlin is by taking a boat tour through the city centre and into the leafy suburbs.

There are a couple of main routes that you can choose from. The main one goes along the river Spree and makes it way past the old Prussian centre of town with its imposing Cathedral, known in Berlin as the Dom, and the house of parliament.  A second option is to take a ride along the quiet canals that meander through Berlin’s neighbourhoods. Along the way you will see amazing architecture as well as lovely parks.  And it is a relaxing way of seeing the city. Most of the boats have a bar on board so you can order a beer or eat a famous German sausage.  There is almost no easier way to relax and get a tour than by sitting on the top deck having a drink.

Speaking of eating and drinking, Berlin is also becoming something of a paradise for food lovers.  I think that you can get some of the best Pizza produced anywhere outside of Italy in Berlin. A great place to try is Due Forni in Prenzlauerberg, in the old eastern suburbs of Berlin.  Here you can get fantastic Pizza and a real atmosphere of the city as experienced by its locals.
