Pen’s Bungalows on Thong Nai Pan Yai
Thong Nai Pan Yai means in the Thai language ‘Big Bay of Pan’. Pan was a semi legendary character from local lore that helped the King of Thailand and for his efforts he was rewarded with both the little and big beaches of Thong Nai Pan. It was centuries before the descendants of Pan were to discover what valuable real estate they had been bequeathed. Today the Thong Nai Pan area on the tropical island of Koh Phangan is one of the hottest holiday destinations in Thailand.
The beaches of Thong Nai Pan are outstandingly beautiful. They are as you imagine a tropical beach should be: white sands, palm trees, clear warm water, tropical birds and flowers all make for a picture perfect scene. Until 2000 it was mostly backpackers who made it down the treacherous road to Thong Nai Pan. Now big hotels have moved into the area and all the smaller operators have rushed to get swimming pools and air-con bungalows to cash in on the boom.
Pen’s Bungalows in Thong Nai Pan Yai have mostly resisted this upsurge in higher end tourism. Most of the accommodation is still cheap wooden bungalows with no frills. You get a bed, a fan, a hammock, a mosquito net and a basic toilet for just over $10 a night. It was one of the few places where you can still find traces of the backpacker culture that originally put Thong Nai Pan on the map.
Pen’s Bungalows does now have a few air-con and concrete places to stay which are beach front. These bungalows have hot water and cost $53 a night.
Next to the accommodation area is a restaurant that serves the usual beach fare of Thai curries and burgers and fries. The staff are friendly and sometimes hard to find. The place has a laid back atmosphere. No staff uniforms and attentive pool service here. Rather you do your own thing and pay when you get round to it.
Pen’s Bungalows is one of the few places in Thong Nai Pan not to have a website. Promotion is something that can wait. Now is the time to enjoy the sun and beach and chill in a hammock.
