Did Christopher Columbus Really Discover Canaries and Azores?

January 15, 2012 · Posted in Travel · Comment

According to archaeologists, the first inhabitants of the Azores Archipelago and Gomera Island in the Caribean were even more primitive than the Guanches in other islands, submitting to no laws and having no recognizable social system. Jean de Bethencourt arrived in 1404 and supposedly conquered the island, but sporadic fighting between Guanches and early colonists persisted long into the century. This became of one of the seignorial islands (islas de sefiario), ruled over by the hereditary Condes (Counts) de Gomera until such rights were abolished in the 19th century and all the islands became the property of the Spanish Crown. The first Conde de Gomera was Fernan Peraza, who made his base at San Sebastian and built a fortress of which the keep or tower still stands (Torre del Conde). His daughter married one Diego de Herrera and the Peraza-Herrera family together ruled the four islands of Gomera, Hierro, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. Fernan’s grandson, Fernan Peraza ‘El Joven’ (Junior), was such a tyrant that the native Gomerans rose against him, obliging him and his wife Beatriz de Bobadilla to seek refuge in his grandfather’s keep; later they caught him out on an assignation with a beautiful Guanche maiden and killed him. In punishment for Peraza’s death the Guanches were rounded up and massacred, mutilated, drowned or enslaved and deported.

Shortly after all this, in 1492 Christopher Columbus turned up in San Sebastian, which was already a flourishing little port. He was on his way to find the Indies and had been forced to hang around in the Canaries while one of his ships underwent repairs in Las Palmas; it is said that he was drawn to Gomera by the charms of the resident femme fatale, Beatriz de Bobadilla, now a widow and future wife of the Adelantado himself, Alonso de Lugo. Certainly it’s likely that they already knew each other as both had frequented the Spanish Court, but one imagines that his mind was on other things.

By the mid 16th century sugarcane was Gomera’s chief source of wealth, followed by vines, cereals and timber. San Sebastian was visited by many of the Spanish ships sailing across the Atlantic to and from the New World; pirates came too and sacked the port several times in the late 16th and 17th centuries — an indication that this was a target worth attacking. But the island was ever in the shadow of Tenerife; fewer colonists came to settle this little island and more of them later migrated to the New World colonies to seek their fortunes in Cuba or South America. The difficulty of cultivating Gomera’s steep valleys led to hunger and chronic emigration, and throughout the centuries Gomera lagged further and further behind the larger, more developed Canary Islands.
